Digital Communication in the Future

Here’s how the general NET communications system works in the future world of Hybrid Singularity.

Top-level Backbone: GNET

net3The top-level, underlying Internet communication backbone that connects all systems together is called Galactic Network, run by a shadowy conglomerate made up of corporate sponsors. All inter-solar communications are routed through GNET. As the top-level backbone, this is the Holy Grail of hacking targets. The corporations theoretically can tap any communication, although hackers can encrypt their transmissions using several mechanisms. One of the best currently in use is called FOO-packet. Since all routed traffic has to be sent in very specific packet size (currently 512MB), any packets that are smaller have to get random characters added to the end of the message to get them to the correct size for transmission. A top-level hacker can take advantage of this by sending portions of encrypted traffic in this “free space”, otherwise known as FOO.

There is only one GNET. There is a rumor that a group of class-A hackers set up their own private GNET called DARKNET, or DNET.

Address links typically end in .gnet, although it is not needed if you are sending data to a local planetary or solar system address.

Mid-Tier Backbones: SWW

The mid-tier backbones are around each colonized solar system. These are Solar-Wide Webs, or SWW. The SWWs are linked through GNET. Underneath the umbrella of SWWs are the planetary backbones.

An address with SWW in the link means the data is meant for Sol, Earths sun. As each new star became colonized, a number was added. 1SWW is for Proxima Centauri, 2SWW is for Alpha Centauri, etc.

Planetary Backbones

net1Around each planet and moon, including those that are not currently inhabited, is a network of quantum-entangled routing satellites. For the Earth, the network is TPN, or Terra Planetary Network. Mars Planetary Network is MPN, Mercury is 1PN for First Planet Network, Venus is 2PN, Earth’s Moon is LPN for Luna Planetary Network, etc.

Major asteroids have their own networks tied to the planetary backbones. These are mostly used by miners, refueling stations, and pirates. The asteroid backbone is a number followed by AP. 002AP, for example, is the asteroid Ceres.

Timezone Backbones

Each planet has a certain number of timezones. Earth, for example, has 24. Each timezone on Earth has a unique address to route data traffic. 01TN is centered on Greenwich, England. Note there is no more “Daylight Savings Time”.

Local Backbones

Once you dive into a Timezone Backbone, it’s almost random and chaotic. Some large cities have city-wide backbones (chitown is Chicago, nny is New New York). Some countries have their own backbones (pn is the Peru Network, ai is Ascension Island). The majority of folks communicate almost solely within their own Local Backbone.

Site Address

A site address is similar to what was used in the early 21st century. YureiCo.corp, for example, is a website based off of the local corporate network (.corp).

Port Address

net2A port address is a specific device or protocol attached to a Site Address. #.YureiCo.corp, for example, connects you to the Hashtag Generator system of YureiCo.corp. AUD.YureiCo.corp is the audio streaming system, ADM is the site administration port, MSG is the messaging system, etc. Many sites use a general PXY connection point to proxy all traffic through their own traffic filtering and routing system.

To connect to a specific terminal system, use ::<Terminal Address>::. For example, ::E87C799DA4::.YureiCo.corp will connect to a very specific terminal with that unique (on that site address) hexadecimal address.

Example of a full address:

::E87C799DA4::.YureiCo.corp.jp.09TN.tpn.sww.gnet means

  1. Terminal called ::E87C799DA4::
  2. Located on the site YureiCo.corp
  3. On the Local Network of
  4. Japan
  5. In Timezone 9
  6. On Earth
  7. Circling the star Sol
  8. On the Galactic Network.

If a person wants to communicate just within the SWW solar network, they can drop off the .GNET. The data could not leave the solar system.

If a person wanted to communicate just on the local network of the Japanese NET system, they could drop the 09tn.tpn.sww.gnet.

One common joke is that all traffic on Earth is spam and junk, so sending data packets to Earth is TP’ing, or toilet-papering.
