Please note: this page is a plain-language overview, not legal advice, and it is not a contract. The terms that apply to your project are the ones written in your quote and agreement.
What you get
Each quote lists the usage rights included for that project, such as ebook, print, audiobook and marketing use, and any limits on print runs, merchandise or other formats.
Stock image licenses
Art built from stock imagery is subject to the license terms of the stock provider. Those licenses usually allow book covers and marketing, but some restrict things like merchandise, very large print runs or sensitive uses. We tell you when a project relies on stock and which limits apply.
AI-generated art and copyright
In many places, including under current U.S. Copyright Office guidance, material generated by AI without enough human authorship may not be protected by copyright. That means others may be able to reuse similar AI-generated elements, and exclusive ownership of those elements cannot be promised. Human-made parts, such as typography, layout and hand edits, may be treated differently.
What we do not promise
- We do not guarantee copyright registration or exclusivity for AI-generated elements.
- We do not guarantee that a retailer, contest or publisher will accept AI-assisted art.
- We cannot give legal advice. For specific questions, talk to a qualified lawyer.
Your responsibilities
- Tell us where and how you plan to use the art.
- Check the AI-art rules of any store, contest or publisher you plan to use.
- Provide only references and materials you have the right to share.
Have questions about a specific use? Include them in your quote request, or read how we use AI.
